Sensex gains 232 points on May 22; Bank Nifty surges 1.15%

Among the broader sectoral indices, Bank Nifty was the clear standout, surging 615.95 points or 1.15% to close at 54,055.35. The banking gauge touched a session high of 54,213.05 before easing marginally into the close, with its low for the day coming in at 53,483.55. Nifty Metal also advanced, adding 58.10 points or 0.44% to finish at 13,271.60, while Nifty Auto edged up a modest 30.85 points or 0.12% to 26,017.10.

On the other side of the ledger, Nifty Pharma was the sharpest sectoral decliner, shedding 316.95 points or 1.27% to close at 24,573.95, after hitting a high of 24,979.10 earlier in the day. Nifty IT slipped 108.65 points or 0.37% to 28,912.45, while Nifty Realty edged fractionally lower by 0.70 points or 0.09% to 774.40.

Axis Bank was the most notable gainer among individual Nifty 50 constituents, climbing 2.56% to ₹1,285.40. ICICI Bank added 1.73% to ₹1,264.30, reinforcing the strength seen in the banking space. Asian Paints rose 1.58% to ₹2,639.80, while Hindustan Unilever gained 1.13% to ₹2,203.60. Wipro bucked the broader weakness in technology to advance 1.69% to ₹203.11.

Sun Pharma bore the heaviest selling pressure among the index’s constituents, falling 2.47% to ₹1,844.60 and contributing significantly to the drag in Nifty Pharma. ITC declined 2.06% to ₹301.70, and ONGC shed 1.98% to ₹290.00. Within the technology space, Infosys fell 0.57% to ₹1,174.50 and TCS dipped 0.43% to ₹2,317.30, though their losses were comparatively contained.

On balance, the session ended with the majority of sectoral indices in the data closing in positive territory. Of the eight indices tracked, five — the Nifty 50, Sensex, Bank Nifty, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Auto — posted gains, while Nifty Pharma, Nifty IT, and Nifty Realty ended in the red. Banking strength and select large-cap buying provided the positive tilt that carried the headline indices to a green close on Friday, May 22.
