Sensex gains 232 points on May 24 as Bank Nifty surges 1.15%

Indian equity markets ended Sunday’s session on a positive note, with the benchmark indices posting modest gains even as sectoral performance remained mixed. The Sensex closed at 75,415.35, adding 231.99 points or 0.31% on the day, while the Nifty 50 settled at 23,719.30, up 64.60 points or 0.27%. The Nifty moved within a day range of 23,671.00 on the lower end to a high of 23,835.65.

Bank Nifty was the standout performer among sectoral indices, advancing 615.95 points or 1.15% to close at 54,055.35, having touched a session high of 54,213.05. The Nifty Metal index also closed in positive territory, gaining 58.10 points or 0.44% to end at 13,271.60. Nifty Auto edged up marginally by 30.85 points or 0.12% to 26,017.10, while Nifty Realty slipped just 0.70 points or 0.09% to close at 774.40.

On the downside, Nifty Pharma was the session’s sharpest sectoral decliner, falling 316.95 points or 1.27% to settle at 24,573.95 after touching a day high of 24,979.10. Nifty IT also closed lower, shedding 108.65 points or 0.37% to end at 28,912.45.

Among individual stocks, Axis Bank topped the gainers’ list, rising 2.56% to close at ₹1,285.40. ICICI Bank followed with a gain of 1.73%, ending at ₹1,264.30. Wipro posted a 1.69% rise to ₹203.11, while Asian Paints added 1.58% to close at ₹2,639.80. Hindustan Unilever rounded out the top five gainers, advancing 1.13% to ₹2,203.60.

Sun Pharma was the session’s biggest loser, declining 2.47% to ₹1,844.60. ITC fell 2.06% to ₹301.70, and ONGC lost 1.98% to close at ₹290.00. Among technology stocks, Infosys slipped 0.57% to ₹1,174.50, while TCS shed 0.43% to end at ₹2,317.30.

Overall, the broader market leaned positive on Sunday, with the headline indices, Bank Nifty, Nifty Metal, and Nifty Auto all closing in the green, even as Nifty Pharma, Nifty IT, and Nifty Realty weighed on the session’s gains.
