Indian equity markets opened on a broadly positive note on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, with the Sensex adding 80.85 points while the Nifty 50 traded nearly unchanged.

Indian equity benchmarks opened Tuesday, May 26, 2026, on a broadly positive footing, though the headline Nifty 50 index showed a near-flat start. The Nifty 50 opened at 24,029.25, marginally lower by 2.45 points or 0.01% against its previous close, trading within an early session range of 23,965.70 to 24,077.20. The modest dip on the broader index contrasted with a firmer tone on the Sensex, which opened at 76,569.81, gaining 80.85 points or 0.11%, with its day range spanning 76,224.14 to 76,616.02.

Among sectoral indices, Nifty Metal emerged as the standout performer at the open, advancing 128.90 points or 0.97% to 13,474.55, touching a session high of 13,474.95. This was the strongest percentage gain across all indices tracked at the open, with the metal index trading near the upper end of its intraday range of 13,319.15 to 13,474.95.

Nifty IT also opened in positive territory, rising 61.10 points or 0.21% to 29,040.95. The index ranged between 28,943.85 and 29,203.10 in early trade. Nifty Auto added 26.10 points or 0.10% to open at 26,489.15, within a day range of 26,362.05 to 26,508.95, while Nifty Realty edged up 1.15 points or 0.15% to 787.20, ranging between 781.15 and 787.70.

Bank Nifty opened at 55,295.05, a marginal gain of just 1.40 points or effectively flat at 0.00%, suggesting little directional conviction in the banking segment at the open. Its early session range was recorded between 55,190.25 and 55,536.80.

The sole sectoral decliner among the indices tracked was Nifty Pharma, which opened weaker by 94.40 points or 0.38% at 24,580.30. This made it the weakest performer at the open on a percentage basis, with the index ranging between 24,573.20 and 24,755.40 in early trade.

Taking stock of the overall opening picture, six of the eight indices tracked opened in positive territory, with one marginally negative and one flat. The breadth of gains, led by metals and supported by IT, auto, and realty, reflected a predominantly positive opening, even as the headline Nifty 50 itself barely moved from its previous close. Pharma was the only clear laggard at the start of the session.
