Indian equity markets ended Wednesday’s session, May 27, 2026, on a subdued note, with the headline indices posting modest declines even as select sectoral indices managed to close in positive territory. The Nifty 50 settled at 23,907.15, down just 6.55 points or 0.03%, after oscillating between a session low of 23,858.25 and a high of 23,983.20 through the day. The Sensex saw a steeper percentage decline in absolute terms, closing at 75,867.80 — a loss of 141.90 points or 0.19%.
Among the broader sectoral landscape, the picture was decidedly mixed. Bank Nifty bore the sharpest losses among the tracked indices, retreating 239.05 points or 0.43% to close at 54,853.85, with the day’s range stretching from 54,738.60 to 55,221.70. Nifty IT also ended lower, shedding 71.80 points or 0.25% to settle at 28,906.70, having touched a high of 29,116.40 earlier in the session.
On the other side of the ledger, metals and automobiles provided a counterweight to the broader weakness. Nifty Metal was the standout performer, surging 225.75 points or 1.67% to close at 13,718.30, touching an intraday peak of 13,873.75. Nifty Auto was not far behind, advancing 383.70 points or 1.45% to 26,864.20 and reaching a high of 26,976.55 during the session. Nifty Pharma added 56.80 points or 0.23% to end at 24,716.00, while Nifty Realty edged up 2.55 points or 0.33% to 784.55.
Tata Steel led the Nifty 50 gainers, closing at ₹214.70, up 2.01% on the day. Maruti Suzuki followed at ₹13,364.00, a rise of 1.18%, while Asian Paints added 0.94% to close at ₹2,671.90. Titan gained 0.78% to ₹4,137.90, and UltraTech Cement rounded out the top five with a 0.57% advance to ₹11,689.00.
ONGC was the session’s most significant decliner, falling 4.68% to close at ₹274.05. ITC shed 3.22% to ₹291.95, while HDFC Bank dropped 2.60% to ₹758.65. Among information technology names, Wipro declined 1.06% to ₹201.58 and Infosys slipped 0.67% to ₹1,159.90.
On balance, three of the seven sectoral indices tracked on the day — Bank Nifty and Nifty IT joining the benchmark in negative territory — finished lower, while four indices, including Nifty Metal, Nifty Auto, Nifty Pharma, and Nifty Realty, posted gains, reflecting a session of divergent moves rather than any uniform directional trend.
